I was sitting in my car one weekend morning waiting for a friend. I looked over and saw a couple pushing a food cart to their apartment building with their purchases for the day. My mind wandered as I thought, I wonder what they would do with the cart once they reached their destination, just leave it by the back door like most people was my conclusion. Minutes later, I see the spouse walking back towards to the food store and then stop to pick up another cart that was left abandoned on the sidewalk on her path as she went to return the cart. As I continued to wait, I looked over and saw another lady full of large purchased items balancing in her arms. She passed a door where she observed someone trying to maneuver a delivery into the narrow door. Without hesitation or fuss, she calmly walked over to the door, held it with her foot and once the delivery person had cleared the door she moved on down the street without a word. Simple kindness, common respect and rules of order all came to mind when witnessing these random acts. It might not seem to be a big deal, it may not have been noticed or seem interesting to anyone including them. In a world that seems more and more to focus on selfishness and the “what’s in it for me” generation, these little acts give me pause and remind me that not all is lost and somehow kindness does still exist and we are not alone in this world, even if sometimes it feels like we are.
