What better way to start your weekend than to head to a local farm and hand-pick your own vegetables and fruit for lunch? The Eastern Shore is an agricultural paradise with so many choices to pick from how can you go wrong? Just look for the signs across the land, you have to look closely, they are simply marked as “U-Pick”. As the seasons change so does the crop. I started out my spring with fresh sugar snap peas to add to my colorful salad, full of vitamins our lunch menu developed into an abundance of flavor with my favorite homemade dressing. For dessert our naturally sweet strawberries filled our bowls with yummy goodness.
Summer is now here and so are the blueberries, as I put on my rubber boots and baseball cap, I head into the fields with my container ready to embark on my hand-pick selections. Each row
of well-developed blueberry bushes has its choice of berries ready for the plucking. The sun is shining and a gentle breeze crosses the field, birds are singing as you work at your own pace. Are you in a hurry?.. then grab a handful and head home.. but if you are you selective like me… only looking for the perfect and firm berries, then you will be there for a while. But its ok… you have time, here on the shore you are not rushed, there is no deadline, no person telling you to do it this way or that, just you and the task at hand and when done the reward is great. Yes, you can go to the store and pick up these items, but if you make the time you can get them yourself, the experience alone is worth every bite.
Peaches and corn are next on my list of pickings and I can’t wait for them! What will you bring to the table this summer?
